ZONTA INTERNATIONAL is a worldwide
classified service organization of executives in business and professions
who devote themselves to civil and social welfare.
ZONTA was founded in Buffalo, New York on November 8, 1919. Zonta
has been granted consultative status with UNESCO of the United Nations.
ZONTA CLUBS are located in 68 countries. The number of clubs is
well over 1,200 and membership totals
over 33,000.
MEMBERS of Zonta Clubs are called ZONTIANS (pronounced ZON-SHUNS).
ZONTA's EMBLEM is a composite of five Sioux Indian symbols, and
the name ZONTA is derived from the Sioux Indian language and means "To
band together for a purpose".
MEMBERSHIP in Zonta is based on classification by business or profession.
Membership is by invitation only and there are strict standards of
eligibility. A Zontian could be a proprietor, partner, corporate
officer, manager, or employed executive, in a responsible position
and with discretionary authority, of a reputable and recognized business.
She could also be engaged in a worthy and recognized profession.
ZONTA OBJECTS include the encouraging of ethical standards in business
and professions, the improvement of legal, political, economic and
professional status of women, community service, and the advocation
of a spirit of good fellowship among Zontians.
The 51st Zonta International Convention was held in July 1992 for
the first time in Asia and in Hong Kong, with an attendance of over
2,500 Zonta members from all over the world. The hosting of the International
Convention in Hong Kong was an important milestone for Hong Kong
in Zonta's history, and it also promoted and enhanced the status
of Hong Kong as an international city. |
