Bearing in mind our commitment to the elderly, the Club conducted, during its early years, projects to furnish homes and improve living condition for the elderly. Throughout the years, Zontians paid visits to the elderly in their Homes and arranged various outings for them. These included the Home of Loving Kindness, the Chee Tak Elderly Home, etc. We provided entertainment programmes, gift packages and food for elderly people. Zontians were able to talk to the elderly and provided them with much needed care and company.
To improve the quality of life of the elderly, the Club further expanded from just visits and upgrading of living environment to strengthening community care and capacity building for the elderly.
”Warm Hearts that Care” campaign was targeted at serving 25 frail and financially deprived elderly aged between 66 and 91, helping them to widen their social circle. This was done jointly with HKYWCA Ellen Li Multi-Service Centre.
Fear of accidental falls often prohibits old people from going out, resulting in social isolation. The "Old Pals in Action" project aimed at assisting the frail elderly who had had history of falls. Volunteers were trained by physiotherapists to teach the senior citizens muscle strengthening and body flexibility exercises in order to reduce the incidence of accidental falls. The project also provided opportunities for the elderly to participate in activities to enrich their social life.
To alert the elderly to maintain good health through balanced diet, the Club sponsored a “Balanced Menu for the Elderly” project organized by Yang Memorial Social Services. The Club paid $40,000 for printing of booklets and setting up a phone-in service to answer enquiries relating to balanced diet for elderly people.
To provide some elderly the rare opportunity to enjoy a sumptuous meal at a five star hotel, the Club invited selected elderly from various elderly community centres to its Annual Charity Lunch. The elderly were often touched by the meagre chance of being treated in a warm and pleasant environment with delicious food, coupled with performances, games and gifts. They much appreciated the care and concern extended to them. |
