25 years community service

Service → Service for Women

As a service organization of women in business and the professions, it is one of the objectives of the Club to keep constant awareness of issues directly related to women in the community.

Over the years, the Club supported projects at the Sisters of the Good Shepherd – Pelletier Hall for young women, the most notable being the Empowerment Project in 1995/6 and the Wellness Project in 1997/8. The latter aimed at stimulating behaviour conducive to health, supporting health-enhancing decisions that promote growth through life and promoting a general feeling of well-being. With a focus on mental health, educational activities were organized for the residents to participate and share concern in groups, culminating in the preparation and publication of personal health development reports.

In recent years, the Club engaged itself in services to empower battered women, single women parents and female ex-offenders through the enhancement of their self-esteem, enlarging their social circle and thus helping them to acquire new skills for better living.

For several years the Club sponsored projects at Serene Court Refuge Centre for Women to support re-integration of battered women into society. Training sessions were provided to such women in rebuilding their self-confidence and handling emotional problems. Hundreds of clothing items, toys and books were donated to battered wives and their children.

To help the Mutual Support Group formed by the discharged women from the Serene Court of Christian Service Centre, the "Seven-colour Sunflower" project provided them with training courses for self-strengthening. Activities of the project included psychological and home management skills training, drama training, community services, children performance as well as family outings to improve mother and child relationship.

"Let Me Grow Again" was a two-year project co-organized with the Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention for female ex-offenders. It enriched the female ex-offenders using a variety of exercises and trainings – the building of self-esteem and self-image; the instillation of social skills, life skills and vocational skills; the enhancement of mutual support; and the opportunity for community participation. Consequently they were encouraged to be integrated into society to lead a normal life.

Our Club worked jointly with other Zonta clubs in Hong Kong and Metro Radio Station in producing a twelve-session (2 hours per session) radio programme on problems relating to responsibilities, families, children, social life and other issues of women.
